Change of Atmosphere

Amsterdam, the city hall in the center of the old city, a new and modernist building. The opera house is connected to the city hall, a design with a light-filled foyer against a hard, sleek natural stone facade. The building on the Amstel River has the potential for a dynamic and vibrant façade, but it doesn’t deliver. Change of Atmosphere aims to enliven the building. Hundreds of square meters of textiles soften the façade, making the wind visible and audible. A performance in which climbers untie the meters-long fabrics on the façade, creating space for a choir singing to the people on the city square from the balconies.

How does the building change, and with it the public space? The changing atmosphere of the façade influences the atmosphere of the square. Just as the temperature changes with increasing wind, so too does the atmosphere change with light, sound, scent, and movement. The colored light also colors the water and reflects on the audience.
